Bela

I'm trying to get back into the drawing habit, so I decided to take on a subject that has proved very challenging to me in the past. Bela Lugosi is some one who has distinct features, but I've always had trouble capturing him. The drawing is always off by a line, and in Lugosi's case, that makes a huge difference. I tried very had to not only capture his unique look, but I wanted to keep him looking handsome. So after multiple attempts, this is probably my most successful Lugosi to date.

  2. When translating Bela into character the chance to miss the mark is especially common. From the sculpting side I've seen so many attempts go awry, but when it comes to any form of Lugosi drawing, the bad far outweigh the good.

You did a great job here. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Thank you Fritz!
Missing the 'Lugosi' mark is very common. Even in in some beautifully drawn or painted pieces I've seen, most of the elements are there, there's just something missing. I do have some favorite 'Lugosis' though. I tried not to study them too much before working on mine as I thought I might be too influenced by them. I also may attempt another Lugosi in the future if I'm feeling lucky.

  5. Thank you. I don't have a lot of the old Universal characters as I'm such a Hammer nut, I'd rather draw them. I am trying to add more to my portfolio though.

  8. Love your Bela,Belle!
Lugosi's personality was perfectly captured, he is alive, that's the most important aspect for a portrait.
Another beautiful, fun piece of art.
