Mad Monster Party Special Edition DVD Out Today!

Most people are familiar with Rankin/Bass and all of their wonderful animated Holiday Specials. I grew up watching Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer every year at Christmas. And I still watch it every year along with Frosty the Snowman, A Year Without Santa Claus, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, and more. But it wasn't until my early twenties that I happened upon the Rankin/Bass feature film, Mad Monster Party. A stop motion animated film featuring classic monster characters, great music and the voices of Boris Karloff & Phyllis Diller, count me in! I recorded MMP off of late night TV (TNT, back when they had MONSTERVISION), and that was my only copy until Anchor Bay released a beautiful, remastered version to DVD in 2003. It was re-released to DVD in 2005 and now it has been released at third time. This time they have included some documentary features. So I will be picking this one up when it is convenient for me.
Now, I decided to mark the occasion with a little drawing. Francesca & Yetch. Yetch loves Francesca.
This drawing was conceived to the Mad Monster Party soundtrack from Percepto records. Really great fun music.

  1. Hey Girl...love this new image. The expressions are great and the lil' guy reminds me of Gomez a little. Top notch work as always! This is a test post after 2 hours of troubleshooting...hopefully it posts!

  3. Many thanks!!

Wens, your post seems to have come thru just fine. I hope that your Blogger account is back on track now.

Shane, I haven't drawn any of the other characters, but I probably will in the future! I was originally going to draw Dracula with Francesca, but decided on Yetch instead. Maybe I'll draw tap dancing Drac! The Monster's Mate would be fun too!

  6. I watched this last year on DVD for the first time in probably 25 years or so...WOW, it was even crazier than I remember it being! Of course, I loved seeing it again, and showing it to my kids. One thing that struck me as an adult was how much Francesca sounds like Kathleen Turner in her prime!

  7. When I'm able to pick this new edition up, I'm going to pass down my other copy to my little sister who is 6 going on 7. I didn't make that comparison of Kathleen Turner & Francesca until now, and you're right! They do sound very much alike. Which is funny because a few years back I thought about dressing up like Francesca for Halloween but thought 'Nobody will know who I am, they will probably all think I'm Jessica Rabbit or something'! Ha! Ha!

  8. Thanks Shane! I will have to do another MMP piece (Monster included) sometime in the future. I've been wanting to watch it again, although I may hold off until I get this SE. Once I watch it again I'm sure I'll be very inspired.

  11. Hey...well I happened to find the Mad Monster Party DVD at Target Sat. night, so we watched it Sunday morning during breakfast and it was SPOOKTACULAR! I kept looking for "Vetch" is it? The little guy from your art piece. I liked him, he made me laugh. I thoroughly enjoyed the video and am so happy to be able to add it to my Halloween Collection. Thanks for turning me on to it. I did a post on it today, along with a new GooseBumps we got along with it. I can't believe that I've never seen this before! As for the characters, my kids liked Dracula and the Invisisble Man the best! But I think I like the 2 you drew the best. I also really liked the theme song too, I think I've heard it somewhere before. We had a great Mad Monster Breakfast! :o)
