Halloween Movie: Halloween III: Season of the Witch

I have a secret to confess. I LOVE Halloween III. Maybe that's not such a big deal to admit anymore since I've seen more & more people coming out of the woodwork to profess their love of the film. It's cheesy & ridiculous in some parts, but there are some scenes in the film that still really disturb me. Following the successful Halloween & Halloween II films, Halloween III (1982) was meant to take the franchise in a new direction. The idea was, they wanted to continue to make films about Halloween with the name 'Halloween' but have new & different stories with each film. Well, it didn't work. People were expecting Michael Myers, and that's not what they got. Instead they got a wonderfully creepy movie about popular children's Halloween masks tied to pagan ritual sacrifice. Hmm, maybe I've said too much. I even love the soundtrack to this movie. It's strange, simple electronic sounds takes me right back to the early 80's.
So my art piece of the day is the 3 Silver Shamrock masks that are featured in the film. And here is a trailer for your viewing pleasure!

  3. Great post & great artwork! This is one of those movies people either love or hate. I love it, for all its wackiness. And yeah, it does just transport you right back to the early 80s, doesn't it?

  4. This flick is way underrated. It probably would have made a better short form story (like an episode of Monsters, Tales From the Darkside, or even Friday the 13th the series), but it's still fun as all hell to watch.

    Really dig the drawing!

  5. I personally never really cared for any of the other "Mike Myers" Halloween movies, but I did like this one.

I do remember when it came out people that had gone to see the senseless slice and dice of the first two movies being upset it did not stay with the formula.

  6. Thanks everybody for your responses!! I've been out of town since Monday & had pre-dated Mon-Wed posts since I wouldn't have my computer. Wow!! See I'm not the only person who likes Halloween III!!

magikalseasons- Great minds think alike! ;)

Frog Queen & Kathryn - I would probably have to say that Halloween III is my favorite of the series. Although I do like the first Halloween movie. And really the first Halloween is pretty light on the gore. I always got creeped out that Michael Myers was just walking around in the day time, not really hiding, but just popping up and then disappearing.

Wings- Thanks! I agree. I've found that usually when I mention Halloween III people either get excited or they groan & go on to talk about how terrible it is. I love it, and I enjoy my trips back to the 80's!

Shawn- It probably would have worked better, if it were cut down a little bit. But I agree, fun as hell to watch! Thanks!!

  7. I've always thought that the studio made a huge mistake in calling this movie "Halloween III", as it tied it to a series of films it had nothing to do with. Had it been just called "Season of the Witch", it think it would have been received far better. It's a fun movie, that is a bit silly in places, but it really doesn't deserve the bad rep it has. I've always challenged folks to watch this without thinking about the previous entries. It isn't a sequel at all, and shouldn't be categorized as such.

Love the artwork, but the way! I remember when this movie was in theaters REALLY wanting that Pumpkin mask!

  8. So nice to find a crew not afraid to come out of the closet on Haloween III! Catching this at the theaters on its original release is one of my favorite 80's Halloween memories: A completely clueless audience packed the house and jumped at every shadow, expecting it to be Michael Myers and when he didn't show I never saw so much airborn popcorn and candy boxes hit the screen. It was GREAT, just like your artwork, Belle. This is on my desktop for the rest of October...

  9. Thanks Gill & Dave!

Gill-Man – They really should have just called it 'Season of the Witch'. Although, I really do like the idea they had to do a different story with a Halloween theme, to continue the franchise. Something like that might work now, because of the internet. Then people would know what to expect.

Dave - Feel the Halloween III love!! I never got to see this at the theater, but I do remember seeing & hearing ads for it. And I can't even tell you when I saw it for the first time. Probably on USA at like 2 am, sometime in the late 80's.
